The Loud

I recently made the trip over to Liverpool for The Loud's EP launch at The Static Gallery. The three piece band features past members of A Love Supreme, previously released by DYR on the 'Dead Young Club Volume 1'. After hearing taster tracks online I was eager for the live experience. They didn't disappoint.

One quote I've found compares their music to "the sensation of walking down Duke Street with a belly full of Cain’s, hitting a wall of sound and waking up in hell". I don't know who wrote that, but it sums it up pretty well. The guitar tone in particular is jagged and violent, which might not be to everyone's taste, but pretty quickly I was craving for its return through every interlude and pause. Kinda like how the first swig of a big bottle of cheap cider can be a bit unpleasant, but sure enough you'll be hitting it back 5 minutes later probably thinking about another one.

I Am A War is becoming a stand out track, and was recently used for an exhibition at FACT, but all the tracks have a feisty swagger to suggest only good things to come for them.

Download their self-released EP, recorded with Ross Ghost Town Halden, from their Myspace here.

And here's a video of a session again done with Ross from Ghost Town:

Dead Young Club Volume 2

We are proud to announce the release of our second limited edition, poster-dressed, wax-sealed, hand-stamped & numbered 10" vinyl compilation EP: Dead Young Club Volume 2. On sale May 17th, it will be limited to 500 copies on vinyl, and also available to download.

Here are the details:

Side A

Gringo Star – All Y’all

All Y’all is the amazing title track from their self released US debut produced by Ben H. Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective). The Georgia foursome are famed for their energetic, instrument swapping live shows and have supported bands such as the Black Lips as well as headlining their own extensive tour. You can catch them on tour with Best Coast and at The Great Escape. They’ve taken the US by storm with a contemporary twist on a vintage style reminiscent of The Kinks and The Animals.

Hooks, attitude, and a dead-on 1960s Aesthetic – What’s not to like? – Pitchfork

A little scuzzy, a little jangly and a lot awesome - Blender

The Cubical – Would Be Lovers

Would Be Lovers shows the softer side to the otherwise primal, psychedelic, blues ridden tracks that frequent their debut album Come Sing These Crippled Tunes. Recorded at Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood with the infamous Dave Sardy (Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, Marilyn Manson), The Cubical scored fantastic reviews across the board which has set them up nicely for their second album and European tour.

Wilson’s lyric’s are beautifully poetic – Artrocker

Enough to raise the ghost of Willie Dixon, track down Captain Beefheart circa Safe As Milk and have a chat with The La’s. And the singers raspy vocal might just shatter light bulbs - Mojo

Side B

In Snowdonia, North Wales Owain Ginsberg used to trek up to quarries and forests with nothing but an 8 track recording machine and his guitar for company. Next came actual, physical band members in the form of the Hamer brothers (CASTLES), Sion Edwards on drums and Liam Simpson on keys. The strength of their demos alone got them played on Radio One so it’s a real treat to get this awesome track from their debut album.

Raw, big and ace – The Fly

Highlife guitars meet kraut-ish tendencies, synths and swooning vocal harmonies in W//A//A – Time Out

Paul Thomas Saunders – Dementia, Depression, Psychosis, Blues

20 year old Paul Thomas Saunders counts pop pioneer Joe Meek and the much loved Leonard Cohen amongst his main influences. Both are very apparent in his work which is poignantly intimate, majestically arranged and self recorded in his basement at home. After making waves at ITC, 2010 is proving to be a very busy year for this young man with a second EP planned alongside extensive touring.

His whisky-soaked vocals belie his years, and the understated delicacy of his songs is a lovely treat – The Fly

Paul Thomas Saunders is a man wise beyond his years – Dance To The Radio

Mega!

Tour dates to support the release will also be announced soon!

better. Playing Live @ Leeds in May, & gigging constantly
despite having just returned from a mammoth European
tour.

Lone Wolf - Keep Your Eyes On The Road
Little late on this as it came out just after I posted my
last loads of videos. Already loved by luminaries such as
Peter Gabriel (who's video Sledgehammer this pays
homage to) & Radioheads Ed O'Brian, check out this
awesome video from Paul Marshall's new project Lone
Wolf. Just finished touring with Wild Beasts, playing
Live @ Leeds in May.

Masters In France - Greyhounds
Another homage, this time to the ace French film '13
Tzameti', from another great Welsh band. Download
single out May 17th.

Awesome band! Can't wait to see them at the Cockpit
11th May. Debut album Astro Coast is a masterpiece.

Mojo 57 & friends

On Sunday we're back up at The Angel's Share with Mojo 57 & friends. Last month was tons of fun with three great acts playing blues, folk and rockabilly. All the acts got up together at the end to play through some classic covers too, which was ace.

The Mojo boys set the bar pretty high with the first of these nights last month, and Sundays show is set to follow suit nicely with performances from The Spirit of John and Tsar Nicholas IIIrd.

So come check out our monthly rhythm and blues hootenanny with Leeds' finest purveyors of the sound of old and their incredibly talented bunch of friends this Sunday 4th April, and the first Sunday of every month, at The Angels Share.

From Leeds city centre, you can catch the number 2 or 3 buses up to Chapel Allerton and back. Entrance is free as always, acts start around 7 and usually finish by 10.30 so you can catch a bus home should you need to.

Read more about the acts and the night on the FACEBOOK EVENT.
