The Cubical

The Cubical are a Liverpudlian 5-piece playing raucous Garage Psych Blues Rock. Debut album 'Come Sing These Crippled Tunes' out now on Dead Young Records.

Following a seal of approval from Mojo magazine as one of the ‘coolest bands of the year’ and a string of support slots with such luminaries as The Magic Band, The Stands and The Coral, The Cubical recorded their debut LP ‘Come Sing These Crippled Tunes’ with Dave Sardy (infamous producer to the likes of Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, Primal Scream, Jet and Marilyn Manson).

Following in the well-trodden footsteps of The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits they recorded the album at Sunset Sound Studios, Hollywood, over 4 “very intense, sweaty Californian days”.

The fantastic live energy of The Cubical was captured using reel-to-reel tape and an old 60’s mixing desk. Sardy also had them using vintage guitars, amps and even an old piano missing a few keys, in order to capture their sound the way he had heard it on stage. Any imperfections were just viewed as welcome additions to an intentionally rough and ready album.

‘Like Me, I’m A Peacock’ is the lead single from the album. Sounding like it has been pulled straight off the decks at a 60s freak-beat party and drenched in psychedelic blues, Dan’s voice is so filthy, unique, and gut wrenchingly raw it commands your utmost attention as he manages to both chastise and plead with us in the same rasping breath.

The record is in shops now in the UK and will be out on Record Collection in the USA and Fuse in Australia in the next few months.

Press:

'If you like your rock'n'roll primal and pounding, and your vocals gritty and growly, then meet Liverpool's answer to the Magic Band' – (The Guardian)

“Mind-warpin’ mutated blues. Don’t let it pass you by.” (Shindig)

'Out of tune guitars clang and the bass and drums shuffle just right enough to raise the ghost of Willie Dixon, track down Captain Beefheart circa Safe As Milk and have a chat wtih The La's. And the singer’s raspy vocal might just shatter your lightbulbs' - (Mojo)

'The key difference between The Cubical and the other thousand odd Beefheart / Waits acolytes, is that they actually pull off this primal, experimental form of rock 'n' roll with considerable poise' - (Drowned in Sound)

'an easy album to get into first time round, full of melodic songs with driving rhythms' 4/5- (Music OMH)

"Wilson makes Waits sound like Tiny Tim" (The Guardian)

"Tracks like 'Woman, I Need Your Love So Bad' and 'Baby Don't Treat Me Bad' sound like they could eat the 22-20s for breakfast.'Come Sing These Crippled Tunes' with them and, oh Lordy, you'll soon be a believer." 4/5 (Whisperin' and Hollerin')

"The Cubical might just be the band to drag Liverpool's music scene kicking and screaming in a new direction." (Liverpool Echo)

Welsh Wonders

Here are some amazing Welsh bands that you should check out:

Yucatan

Yucatan is the project of Dilwyn Llwyd & co. Their debut album was self released in 2007 to rave reviews from Drowned In Sound amongst others, and the self-titled LP has recently been given a Japanese release too. Yucatan’s use of the Welsh language brings comparisons to Sigur Ros for its other-worldliness. The comparisons go further as Sigur Ros performed mastering duties for the album in Iceland. A release featuring new material (partly recorded in Caves) will be coming soon.

“Stunning music from a special place” – Huw Stephens.

WE//ARE//ANIMAL

A special place indeed with bands as good as these. We Are Animal have got some crackin’ tunes, and a really great lo-fi sound on these bedroom demos from just a Boss 8-track recorder. Think The Kills with a few more members, great melodies and tasteful use of synths. Keep your eyes out for the upcoming single ‘Hunting’, this class tune and more are “soon to be on iTunes and all that bollocks”.

Colorama

Their Myspace page description of Folk/Pop/Psych pretty much sums up the Colorama sound, but they do it so so well. Their new mini-album of fantastically crafted songs, ‘Magic Lantern Show’, was produced by the legendary Edwyn Collins (‘Never Met A Girl Like You Before’) and has just been self-released on their label Redbricks Records. Comes recommended from the all-seeing all-knowing Matt Bradshaw of Jumbo & YaDig?

Yr Ods

Awesome blissed-out synth pop for fans of TV On The Radio. At least the one song on their myspace is, and it’s such a corker NME have put it up on their blog, and Huw Stephens has been loving it on Radio 1. A top tip for Glastonbury this year, so expect to see them back next time too. Upcoming gigs only cover London & Wales but expect to hear more about these fellas!

Piskie Sits, The Heebie Jeebies & This Many Boyfriends @ Oporto

Dead Young & Oporto present:

Heading up our joyous collection of LoFi Indie popsters are the fantastically shambolic Piskie Sits, sounding like their Wakefield luminaries The Cribs if they’d not got so damn wound up and with all the best influences from Sonic Youth to Teenage Fanclub. Having been blasted all over the radio, even playing live for Huw Stephens on Radio 1 and for Mark Riley on 6music, supports for the likes of The Fall and releases on Louder Than Bombs followed and in a time where the plaid shirt mafia are again lethargically spilling out of our speakers the Piskies remind us that they still do it better than anyone, it’s like Pavement never broke up. Oh, wait.
“Rather wonderful” - The BBC
“Glorious Pavement distortion” – ARTROCKER

Providing the meat in this tasty sandwich are our favourite Hot Boys from Rotherham , a much more agro noise flies out of them, like a mix of Vampire Weekend and Captain Beefheart, all calypso rhythms and disjointed party vibes amidst slacker guitar and equatorial funk mixed with witty drawl. Signed to our good friend’s Everything on Toast, African Bathroom is a god damn TUNE!

You better like The Pastels or these Leeds noiseniks will have a word or two to say about it, fantastic considered indie pop lending equally from quintessentially English romantics such as Morrissey and the messy yet informed fun of Los Campesinos. They blame boredom, but no one is complaining, especially as they’re supporting hero Darren Haymen very soon, get down early to see em first.

Welcome

Hello and welcome to the Dead Young Blog.

Dead Young is an independent record label, club night, promoter and artist management company based in Leeds and operating across the UK.

We run nights with live music and DJs on the first Tuesday of every month at Oporto on Call Lane, and the last Sunday of every month at The Angel's Share in Chapel Allerton. Both are always free entry, so there's no reason not to check them out if you haven't done already, they're really quite good!

I should mention that we are not journalists, nor do we
purport to be them with this blog. When we are writing about stuff we will get to the point and give you links to follow, videos to watch, tracks to download, or whatever else. Its just stuff we dig.

So dig with us!
