Quidrophenia

Dead Young is taking the month of April off from gigs at Oporto after our two mega nights over the last few days. Many thanks to all who came down for all the marvelous talents of Zoey Van Goey, Blood Oranges, David Henshaw, Young Rebel Set, Three Blind Wolves, Over The Wall and Albert Ross & The Otters. Hope y'all liked our new stage! I absolutely loved crawling underneath it fastening bolts and getting rusty crap in my eye! S'ok I've fished it out now...

But just because we're taking a break doesn't mean the world grinds to a halt! no no no sir! Dead Young would like to throw a big messy bag of enthusiasm all over this years' QUIDROPHENIA!

On bank holiday Monday 5th April there will be an almighty collection of amazing acts playing at Oporto. Starting from 12.30pm, entry is just a quid, 100% of which goes to Cancer Research.
The acts playing include:

Architect of beautiful psychedelic folk music, Paul is a most recent addition to the Dead Young family, a track of whose will feature on an upcoming DYR release (details coming soon!).

Big banshee howls, and shrieking organ riffs from the Garage Glam devotees of Bacchus, the god of wine (and therefore, obviously, crazed party-animals).

Blending Rockabilly, Surf & Punk sounds, this great Leeds band of highly experienced musicians always impress. I can't stop listening to 'Anna Lucia', it sounds like it's straight off a Tarantino soundtrack.

An amalgamation of musicians from bands such as Old Romantic Killer Band, Last Gang, Secret Circuits (also playing) & The Little Black Hearts (also playing), this relatively new project is winning fans fast for their dirty old fashioned rock style, and singalong choruses.

Plus many more great acts I'd love to tell you about, but you can just as easily find on the FACEBOOK EVENT.

Ooh and I almost forgot, there'll be prizes to be won too! Including some lovely items from ourselves, Brew Records and Dance To The Radio, and lots of Jagermeister I'm sure...

Great music, good cause, highly recommended.

Zoey Van Goey, Young Rebel Set & more!

Hi folks!
Sorry it's been a bit quiet on the blog front. We've been very busy planning plenty of fun stuff coming up, so please read on...

As you can see above, Zoey Van Goey will be gracing us at Oporto on Sunday 28th March. Hailing from Glasgow, the trio's music has been described as "folk-cellar pop with electronic elements", actually I think they have a new 4th member now too. Apparently 'he has curly hair and a beard, and will delight children of all ages', excellent!

Here's a cool video of theirs:

Support comes from Blood Oranges who are amazing simply because they look like this:

...and from David Henshaw, who will be performing for the first time with his new full band!
Free entry, I can't think of a better way of spending my Sunday.

We're also proud to welcome Young Rebel Set to Oporto on Tuesday 30th March

These gritty urban folksters will have had some impressive shows before they join us on this tour, playing an NME Awards Show at Cargo with Detroit Social Club, The Ex Hacienda offices in Manchester with Twisted Wheel and an acoustic gig at the Ramones Museum in Berlin!

"huge, life-affirming songs that nod to Springsteen'n'Dylan" - The Fly
"raw and honest and true... Watch out. Young Rebel Set are coming" - The Guardian
"Imagine The Boss had he been 'Born In The Yorkshire Dales rather than the USA" - NME

Free track from the NME -> HERE.

Support comes from two incredible Scottish acts Three Blind Wolves (who's singer Ross was voted third best Scottish solo artist in the Jock Rock poll for 2009, narrowly behind Malcolm Middleton and King Creosote) & Over The Wall (“This is electro pop with reflective neutrality and bite – 9/10” – Rock Sound). Plus local heroes Albert Ross and The Otters.

And if that isn't enough for you we've even got Yonderboy joining us on the decks inbetween bands and afterwards til the early hours.

Finally, if you're still reading, I'll be spinning some groovy, happy, shiny, daytime musics at the Angels Share on Saturday 27th March for the second of their fabulous monthly Vintage Fairs!

There'll be loads of cool stalls across 3 floors selling everything from mens & womens clothing, records, jewelry, artwork, toys and more. Oh and the swap-shop is ace. Bring in some old clobber and swap it for some new stuff, sweet deal! Well not 100% new but you yknow what I mean...
Details on FACEBOOK EVENT.

And if you got through all that, you deserve a drink.
I'm gonna go make a brew.

Sam Airey - Season's Change

Sam Airey, Dead Young pal and provider of tequila, has recently penned his debut EP 'Season's Change', pictured below. Recorded with Whiskas (Forward Russia/Honour Before Glory) in Leeds late last year, it features several small pleasant additions to the solo live set up with which Sam has gained popularity in the last year or so. With help from Jim Morrow (drums), Hannah Wilson (backing vocals/additional keys), and Kieran O'Malley (fiddle), Sam has created a beautiful little folk record that he describes as 'the culmination of what (he has) been working towards for the last year or so'. In doing such, he has gained praise from pundits such as Steve Lamacq on Radio 2, and booked himself a place at Live at Leeds festival later this year along side other Dead Young faves & Yorkshire music stalwarts: Paul Thomas Saunders, Honour Before Glory, Ellen & The Escapades, Blood Oranges, Just Handshakes (We're British), Napoleon IIIrd, The Bacchae & many many more.

Please enjoy Sam's track Row Upon Row from the EP, available here, but do go and buy the full CD available at Crash, Jumbo & on his bandcamp site here.

Busy Week!

Much fun was had last night at Oporto. The manic movement around a ton of equipment by Juffage kept the audience captivated, and he surprised us all by leaving several stereos around the venue at the end of his set playing noisy/ambient loops. Spirit of John were entertaining as ever, a most consistent quality act. And Thomas Truax was on top form taking a wander around the venue (see above) and even strolling outside to perform through the big window next to the smokers and bouncers. Many thanks to all attendees & involvees (if that's not a word it should be!).

But looking forwards, tomorrow we welcome our second guest DJs to the Neon Cactus in as many weeks. The marvelous Passion Pit will perform a sold-out show at Leeds Met this Thursday 4th March, after which they'll pay us a visit on Call Lane.
Shuttle is the main DJ who, as well as drumming for Passion Pit, is himself an artist and producer of the highly regarded Ninja Tune label. As well as a couple of great mixes up on his Myspace (linked above) there's also a fantastic brand spanking new one from Clash Music to get your hands on that you can stream or download here. Covering the best of dubstep, bassline, garage, techno and ambient house, Shuttle is certain to bring the party in a big way! And if last weeks Hot Chip party is anything to go by, this is going to be another spectacular night!
More info on the Facebook Event.

Also, this weekend sees the return of live music at The Angels Share, and the start of Mojo 57's residency!
On the first Sunday of the month, the Mojo boys will be joined by friends and contemporaries playing Blues, Folk, Americana & Rockabilly. Starting This Sunday 7th March with X-Ray Cat Trio & Troy Faid.
More info on the Facebook Event.

Whoah, that's your lot folks.
Party on!

(random side note - follow Andrew WK on twitter here for some humorous party tips!)
