Here are some amazing Welsh bands that you should check out:
Yucatan is the project of Dilwyn Llwyd & co. Their debut album was self released in 2007 to rave reviews from Drowned In Sound amongst others, and the self-titled LP has recently been given a Japanese release too. Yucatan’s use of the Welsh language brings comparisons to Sigur Ros for its other-worldliness. The comparisons go further as Sigur Ros performed mastering duties for the album in Iceland. A release featuring new material (partly recorded in Caves) will be coming soon.
“Stunning music from a special place” – Huw Stephens.
A special place indeed with bands as good as these. We Are Animal have got some crackin’ tunes, and a really great lo-fi sound on these bedroom demos from just a Boss 8-track recorder. Think The Kills with a few more members, great melodies and tasteful use of synths. Keep your eyes out for the upcoming single ‘Hunting’, this class tune and more are “soon to be on iTunes and all that bollocks”.
Their Myspace page description of Folk/Pop/Psych pretty much sums up the Colorama sound, but they do it so so well. Their new mini-album of fantastically crafted songs, ‘Magic Lantern Show’, was produced by the legendary Edwyn Collins (‘Never Met A Girl Like You Before’) and has just been self-released on their label Redbricks Records. Comes recommended from the all-seeing all-knowing Matt Bradshaw of Jumbo & YaDig?
Awesome blissed-out synth pop for fans of TV On The Radio. At least the one song on their myspace is, and it’s such a corker NME have put it up on their blog, and Huw Stephens has been loving it on Radio 1. A top tip for Glastonbury this year, so expect to see them back next time too. Upcoming gigs only cover London & Wales but expect to hear more about these fellas!
